Hawaii Car Shipping Requirements: Documents and Preparation

Published by Highroad Auto Transport · Sources checked October 10, 2026

The clear answer

Confirm the ocean carrier accepts your exact vehicle, obtain its direction-specific document checklist, prepare the car to its current instructions, and arrange both terminal handoffs. A mainland road pickup does not by itself confirm an ocean booking. EVs, modified vehicles, and non-running cars need specific acceptance checks.

Scope: Mainland–Hawaii planning in both directions; carrier policies and terminal procedures must be reconfirmed for the booking.

Map the whole journey before booking the road leg

Identify the mainland collection location, departure terminal, destination island and port, and final receiving arrangement. Honolulu on Oahu is not interchangeable with another island’s destination. Ask whether transfers or a separate receiving trip are involved.

Write down who is responsible for each leg, its cost, and the handoff documents. Our Hawaii transport service page explains the information needed for a request. Confirmed inland availability should not be mistaken for confirmed ocean acceptance.

Check vehicle acceptance first

Provide the exact model, propulsion type, operating condition, dimensions, and modifications. Mention leaks, clearance, unusual starting procedures, and any battery damage or recall concern. Ask whether the vehicle can be accepted on the specific service being considered.

Matson currently publishes an EV and plug-in-hybrid acceptance suspension. Other carriers have their own conditions. Read the Hawaii EV guide before arranging movement to a terminal.

Use the document checklist for your direction

Ask for the requirements for mainland-to-Hawaii or Hawaii-to-mainland specifically. Confirm ownership, registration, lender/lessor permission where required, and authorization if someone else presents the car. Check that vehicle identifiers and owner names agree across the documents.

Hawaii is a domestic destination. Do not automatically apply foreign vehicle-export procedures to an ordinary mainland–Hawaii shipment. If the itinerary continues abroad, ask which additional customs steps apply to that separate movement.

Prepare the car using the selected carrier’s instructions

Get the written instructions for cleanliness, personal belongings, fuel or battery charge, keys, alarms, and vehicle condition. Pasha’s preparation guide calls for a clean, operable vehicle, removal of personal items, and fuel between one-eighth and one-quarter tank. These are named carrier instructions, not a universal rule for every transport service.

For shipments leaving Hawaii, pay particular attention to soil, seeds, and agricultural material. Ask what inspection and cleaning steps apply to your vehicle and direction. Do not assume a quick exterior wash addresses every requirement.

Treat terminal deadlines separately from sailing dates

Confirm the receiving appointment, latest acceptable delivery time, document submission, and what constitutes accepted cargo. At the other end, ask when the vehicle becomes available for collection; vessel arrival and release to the customer are different events.

Check current storage terms and the receiving person’s availability. If you are flying to the island, avoid assuming the car can be collected immediately after landing. See pickup windows and timing for a planning framework.

Inspect at each handoff and retain the records

Photograph the car before road pickup or terminal delivery, retain the condition documents, and inspect again when collecting. Know the correct contact for the leg on which a problem occurred. Road and ocean liability terms may differ.

Ask how any additional insurance works, what value is protected, and how claims must be submitted. Our insurance guide helps organize the questions without assuming all legs share one policy.

Your Hawaii planning checklist

  • Exact vehicle, propulsion type, condition, and dimensions confirmed.
  • Origin, destination island, and each transport leg identified.
  • Current carrier acceptance and preparation instructions obtained.
  • Documents and representative authorization accepted.
  • Terminal appointments, receiving availability, and storage terms checked.
  • Insurance questions and condition-record procedures resolved.

Highroad accepts Hawaii inquiries for a scope and availability discussion. A request does not promise that every vehicle or service combination can be arranged.
