Car Shipping Rules & Consumer Protection Guides

The clear answer

Before shipping a car, verify the businesses involved, understand the written terms, confirm vehicle requirements, and plan the pickup and delivery records. Use these guides to find the next practical step—from comparing quotes to handling damage. Rules, carrier policies, and recommendations are identified separately.

Scope: Customer guidance for the contiguous United States and Hawaii, with international distinctions where relevant. Alaska is not a Highroad service area.

Start with the question you need answered

Before booking: verify the company and the agreement

Identify the business arranging the shipment and the carrier operating the truck. Check applicable records independently and match the names to the agreement and payment instructions. A registration record is a useful check, not a government recommendation or a guarantee of a particular result.

Next, compare the written scope: route, vehicle condition, equipment, price assumptions, dates, and cancellation terms. Our questions to ask before booking gives you a checklist to use during a quote discussion. Keep the answers with the accepted agreement.

Before pickup: resolve the details that can stop a handoff

Confirm the car is ready, the seller has authorized release, and the assigned equipment suits its condition. Tell the provider about low clearance, modifications, locked wheels, missing keys, narrow streets, or restricted loading hours. These details can affect the plan more than the distance alone.

Ask about personal belongings, documents, keys, authorized representatives, and the condition inspection. Review our shipping process and service options alongside the relevant guide. Do not treat an inquiry form as a booking confirmation.

At delivery: inspect, document, and follow the right process

Have a receiving person available who can compare the vehicle with its pickup record. Document concerns promptly and retain the paperwork and photographs. If damage is discovered, the delivery-damage guide explains evidence, notification, and formal claims.

A complaint to a regulator and a claim seeking payment serve different purposes. Deadlines and submission requirements can depend on the shipment and applicable terms. Get qualified advice where an individual legal or insurance decision is needed.

Hawaii requires a road-and-ocean plan

Identify the island, terminals, ocean carrier, and any separate road transport. Vehicle acceptance, document requirements, preparation, and collection arrangements must fit the actual booking. A road carrier’s instructions do not automatically answer what the ocean carrier requires.

Use the Hawaii requirements checklist, then check the current EV and plug-in-hybrid guidance if applicable. Named carrier policies are dated because acceptance can change.

How to use the sources in these guides

Government rules, a company’s acceptance policy, and a practical suggestion are different kinds of information. Each guide links to the material supporting its important requirements and identifies its scope. A named carrier’s policy is not presented as a rule for every carrier.

Examples are hypothetical planning situations, not claims about completed Highroad shipments. Publication by Highroad does not imply government endorsement or a legal review. The dates identify when sources were checked; use current official instructions for an actual booking and report a suspected error through our contact page.

Ask a question about your actual shipment

Highroad’s form collects route, vehicle, condition, timing, and callback information. Use it to explain what you are moving and the problem you need to solve. No online transport payment is taken, and submitting the form does not reserve a truck or confirm a sailing.

Request a shipping callback for a new shipment, or contact Highroad about an existing inquiry. Do not include payment credentials, identity documents, or a full legal claim file in the general form.

Payments, handoffs, claims, and special shipping requirements

Follow the next steps in your research: clarify payment terms, prepare the vehicle handoff, understand claim procedures, and check loading or export requirements before booking.
