Open car transport
Open car transport carries your vehicle on an exposed trailer. It is a practical option to discuss for an everyday car, SUV, or pickup when enclosure is not a priority.

When is open car transport a useful choice?
Start with open shipping for a standard, operational vehicle whose owner accepts normal road and weather exposure. You avoid driving the route yourself, but the vehicle is not inside a covered trailer. Rain, dust, and road exposure remain part of the shipment.
Open transport is different from a driveaway service: the vehicle is carried rather than driven the full journey. Tell us if you prefer more shelter, have a collectible, or need special loading for low clearance. Those details can make enclosed or specialized equipment worth discussing.
What details help us assess your request?
Provide the year, make, model, operational condition, and pickup/delivery ZIP codes. Describe any lift kit, oversized tires, roof rack, cargo box, or other change that affects dimensions.
- A full-size pickup may need a different space assessment from a compact sedan.
- A vehicle that starts but cannot move or brake needs additional review.
- Access restrictions at a dealership or residence should be included.
What affects an open transport quote and schedule?
Route availability, vehicle size, condition, loading needs, and your pickup window affect the request. Compare quotes using the same vehicle and dates, and ask whether each price is an estimate or a confirmed booking price.
Open transport does not automatically mean the next truck is available or that delivery takes a fixed number of days. Discuss pickup availability and the estimate after loading separately. Share receiving dates as well as departure dates.
What should I do before an open-trailer pickup?
Clean enough of the exterior to inspect it, photograph existing marks, and remove valuables and loose items. Follow the assigned carrier’s fuel instructions, provide working keys, and disclose leaks or starting problems. Review the condition record at pickup and delivery; enclosure choice does not replace these checks.
A practical planning example
For a standard sedan going from Dallas to Atlanta, start with open transport and a useful pickup window. If the car has large aftermarket wheels or cannot move under its own power, explain that before the equipment is assessed.
This is a planning example, not a scheduled route or a completed Highroad shipment.
Is open transport a sensible choice for my everyday car?
Open transport can be a suitable starting point for a standard daily-driver car, SUV, or pickup when an uncovered trailer is acceptable. The vehicle travels exposed to weather and normal road conditions. It is carried rather than driven between your origin and destination, apart from the movements needed for handoffs and loading.
Tell us if the vehicle has a fresh finish, unusual value, low clearance, or a condition concern that changes your priorities. Those details help you compare enclosed transport with an open-trailer request instead of deciding only from the headline price.
Will rain, road dust, or winter weather affect an open shipment?
Expect ordinary outdoor exposure; open shipping does not include a sealed protective enclosure. A vehicle can arrive dusty or dirty. If you are shipping from Minneapolis in winter or from Phoenix during hot weather, explain any condition-specific concern and follow the transporting provider’s preparation instructions.
Do not fit a loose aftermarket cover unless the carrier expressly accepts it and explains how it will be secured. A cover that shifts during travel can create its own problem. Photograph the clean vehicle before pickup so its existing finish and marks are easier to record.
Can I choose the top deck or guarantee that my car will not be moved?
Ask about loading preferences, but do not assume a particular position or a no-repositioning promise. Trailer configuration, other vehicles, unloading order, dimensions, and securement requirements affect where a car can travel. A preference should not be treated as a confirmed service unless the transporting company accepts it in writing.
Disclose roof racks, lift kits, oversized tires, and unusually low front bumpers. A pickup’s bed length and cab configuration matter. The name of the model alone may not describe the space or clearance needed on the trailer.
How much does open car transport cost, and how long will it take?
You need a route-specific quote and separate pickup and transit estimates. Distance is one input; vehicle size, condition, dates, endpoint access, and available equipment also matter. A Dallas-to-Atlanta sedan request and a rural Montana-to-coastal Maine pickup request cannot be priced from the same mileage assumption.
Ask whether the price is an estimate or a confirmed booking figure, what it includes, and what happens if the car or dates change. Tell us your actual deadline. Paying more or selecting open transport does not by itself confirm a particular arrival day.
Can I leave luggage in the car or send it from a dealership?
Get written approval before leaving any belongings inside. Remove valuables and loose items and ask what the assigned carrier permits, including any weight, placement, or coverage restrictions. Vehicle shipping should not be assumed to include a household move.
For a dealership pickup in Houston or an online purchase in Charlotte, confirm payment, release permission, keys, inspection availability, and business hours before requesting collection. Ask the seller to report the actual operating condition, rather than relying on photos or the listing’s “runs” label.
What do I check when the car arrives?
Compare the car with the pickup inspection and photos before completing the delivery paperwork. Record any new concern clearly, keep copies, and follow the transporting company’s claim instructions promptly. Ask about its cargo coverage, limits, exclusions, and reporting procedure before booking; “insured” alone is not enough detail.
Provide a receiving contact who can make time for the inspection. If you are moving from San Diego to Raleigh and arriving by plane, explain the gap between your travel date and your ability to receive the car. The shipping checklist explains both handoffs.
Open car transport: common questions
Will the car be protected from weather?
No. An open trailer leaves the vehicle exposed to weather and normal road conditions. Discuss enclosed transport if added shelter matters.
Is open transport always cheaper?
Do not assume a fixed price relationship. Compare available options for the same route, vehicle, dates, and included service.
Can an SUV or pickup travel on an open carrier?
Request an assessment using the exact model, dimensions or modifications, and condition so suitable capacity can be confirmed.
