Does Personal Auto Insurance Cover Car Shipping?

Highroad Auto Transport · Sources checked October 10, 2026

The clear answer

Your personal auto insurance may cover some losses during shipping, but coverage cannot be confirmed from the phrase “full coverage.” Ask your insurer about the actual transport arrangement, including loading, unloading, storage, and any ocean leg. Get the answer tied to your policy and vehicle.

Scope: Personal insurance questions for vehicle owners; coverage depends on the actual policy and shipment.

Start with the coverage you actually purchased

The NAIC's auto insurance overview distinguishes liability coverage from protection for physical damage to your own car. It also explains collision and comprehensive coverage. Those categories are useful starting points, but they do not establish whether a specific shipping loss is covered.

Give your insurer the route, expected dates, transport method, and vehicle details. Explain if the vehicle will wait at a terminal or change carriers. Ask which policy wording answers the question, rather than relying on a general assurance that the car is insured.

Questions to send your insurer

– Does this policy cover my vehicle while it is carried commercially? – Are loading, unloading, and temporary storage included? – Does coverage change on an ocean or international leg? – Which deductible and valuation method would apply? – Are modifications, spare parts, or personal belongings excluded? – How quickly must I report a possible loss, and to whom? – Do I need approval before repairs or before signing a settlement?

Keep the response with your shipping records. If your representative cannot confirm the answer, ask for review by someone authorized to interpret or amend the coverage.

Check carrier coverage separately

Your own policy and the transporting carrier's coverage are separate questions. Ask the carrier or its insurance representative about the relevant policy, limits, exclusions, and handling of claims involving your type of vehicle. A certificate alone may not answer those questions.

Read our car shipping insurance guide before accepting a general statement that everything is covered. Enclosed equipment can address exposure during transport, but it does not settle insurance terms.

If damage occurs, coordinate the reports

Document the condition, promptly notify the relevant parties, and ask each recipient what it needs. Tell your insurer if you are also pursuing a carrier claim. Keep one consistent chronology and disclose other payments or settlements; do not seek duplicate compensation for the same loss.

Before signing a release, ask whether it affects your insurer's recovery rights. A claim-handling conversation with a broker does not necessarily satisfy your own policy's reporting conditions or the carrier's formal filing requirements.

Planning example: a customer has comprehensive and collision cover and is shipping a car across the country. The useful next step is a policy-specific written answer about commercial transit—not cancelling coverage because the car will not be driven.

Questions customers ask

Should I cancel insurance while the car is on a truck?

Discuss any change with your insurer and lender first. Consider collection, storage, registration, and financing requirements too.

Does comprehensive always cover shipping damage?

No blanket answer is reliable. The cause, terms, exclusions, and facts matter.

Can Highroad interpret my policy?

Your insurer or qualified insurance adviser should confirm your coverage.

Plan your shipment

Share the pickup and destination, vehicle condition, timing, and any document or access concern. Request a shipping callback to discuss the next steps. A form submission requests contact; it does not book transportation, confirm acceptance, or take payment.
