Shipping a Car to California: Registration and Emissions Checklist
Shipping a vehicle into California does not complete its registration or establish emissions eligibility. California DMV instructs new residents to register an out-of-state vehicle within 20 days of becoming a resident or bringing the vehicle into the state. Check how the rule applies to your circumstances before scheduling delivery.
Check eligibility before buying or shipping
California certification can matter when a California resident acquires an out-of-state vehicle. A vehicle with fewer than 7,500 miles that is not California-certified can face registration restrictions unless an exemption applies. This is not a blanket ban on every low-mileage vehicle brought by a new resident.
Check the emissions label, ownership history, mileage, and applicable exemption with DMV before purchase. Do not assume a passing smog test alone resolves a certification restriction. Imported vehicles can also have separate federal eligibility requirements.
Prepare the registration file
Use the DMV out-of-state checklist to identify the application, ownership evidence, VIN verification, fees, and any required smog certification for your vehicle. If a lender holds the title, ask DMV what lender documentation is needed.
Keep the purchase contract and tax records if the car was recently acquired. A shipping bill of lading documents transport; it does not replace ownership evidence or determine the tax due.
Arrange verification and emissions steps
Confirm who may perform the required vehicle verification and whether the vehicle needs a smog inspection. Requirements and exemptions depend on the actual vehicle and transaction, so avoid relying on a seller's statement that an inspection in another state is sufficient.
Plan delivery to a location where you can legally and safely move the vehicle through the remaining process. A transporter dropping off an unregistered car does not grant permission to drive it to appointments.
Keep transport and DMV deadlines separate
The pickup window, delivery estimate, DMV registration deadline, and temporary operating authority are separate questions. If transport is delayed, contact DMV about your situation instead of assuming the shipping delay automatically extends a legal deadline.
Before handoff, retain the carrier's inspection record and photograph the car. After delivery, complete the state process and keep the registration, insurance, and emissions records together. For a temporary visit or unusual ownership situation, obtain DMV guidance before applying a new-resident checklist.
Plan your shipment
Request a shipping callback with the route, vehicle, condition, and preferred timing. This is an inquiry; it does not book transportation, take payment, establish registration eligibility, or confirm carrier acceptance.
