Shipping a Car to Florida: New-Resident Vehicle Checklist

The clear answer

Arrange Florida registration separately from vehicle delivery. Florida's new-resident guidance calls for registration within 10 days of establishing residency. Contact the county tax collector about the trigger that applies to you, especially if you are relocating, starting work, or dividing time between states.

Confirm your registration situation

A permanent move, a temporary visit, and a newly purchased vehicle are not necessarily the same transaction. Do not assume that calling yourself a seasonal resident settles insurance or registration obligations. Explain your actual use and residency circumstances to the tax collector and insurer.

The Jacksonville Tax Collector's new-resident checklist provides an official example of the Florida document process. Use your own county's appointment and submission instructions.

Organize title and lienholder records

Prepare the out-of-state title, acceptable identification, Florida insurance evidence, and any required current registration. If a lienholder retains the title, obtain its contact information and ask how the county will coordinate the title transfer.

For a leased vehicle, check the lessor's required authorization before your appointment. Names and signatures matter: a vehicle titled jointly or held by a business may need a different document package from one owned outright by an individual.

Check VIN verification before visiting

Out-of-state vehicles can require VIN verification. Ask the county which form, verifier, and procedure apply, and whether any exception covers your vehicle. Do not assume the transport driver's bill of lading is the state's VIN verification.

If the vehicle arrives after your county appointment, reschedule or ask about the correct sequence. Shipping photographs are useful for condition evidence but do not replace an official verification when one is required.

Coordinate insurance and road use

Tell the insurer when and where the vehicle will be principally kept, and confirm that the policy meets Florida registration requirements. Cargo coverage during transport is separate from the owner's coverage after delivery.

Plan a legal way to move the vehicle if its previous plates or registration expire during the move. Ask the tax collector about appropriate temporary authority; do not assume the shipping receipt permits road use.

Before the driver leaves, inspect the vehicle and keep the delivery report. Then finish the title and registration process using the county's fee and tax calculation rather than relying on a generic online total.

Plan your shipment

Request a shipping callback with the route, vehicle, condition, and preferred timing. This is an inquiry; it does not book transportation, take payment, establish registration eligibility, or confirm carrier acceptance.
