Shipping a Car to Georgia: Title, Registration, and Tax Checklist
Georgia's Department of Revenue tells new residents to title and register their vehicles within 30 days of moving. Obtain the required Georgia driver's license or identification first, then use the county tag office for the vehicle process. Shipping delivery does not complete either step.
Start with the state and county sequence
The Georgia DOR new-resident checklist identifies Georgia identification, the signed title application, ownership evidence, insurance, applicable emissions compliance, and payment.
Check your county tag office's appointment and submission requirements. A move involving a leased vehicle, joint owners, or a recently purchased car may need additional documents beyond the basic checklist.
Resolve a lender-held or leased title
If you have the original out-of-state title, keep it available for the title transaction. When the title is held by a lienholder or leasing company, DOR identifies the T-17 Statement of Title Held by Lienholder, Security Interest Holder, or Leasing Company.
Confirm the supporting records and signatures with the tag office. Do not substitute a shipping invoice for ownership evidence or assume that a lender's online account page completes the title process.
Check emissions for your county and vehicle
Georgia's new-resident guidance identifies emissions requirements in 13 metro Atlanta counties for applicable vehicles. Examples include Fulton, Cobb, and Gwinnett. Requirements depend on the vehicle and county; not every Georgia registration requires the same test.
Ask whether testing must be completed before your tag-office visit and ensure your Georgia insurance evidence is in the accepted form. Transport cargo insurance is separate from the owner's required coverage.
Budget for the correct tax category
DOR states a 3% title ad valorem tax on fair market value for vehicles brought into Georgia by new residents. Do not apply that figure automatically to an ordinary vehicle purchase or an unusual lease transaction. Ask the county to determine your actual tax basis and any applicable treatment.
Keep purchase records, existing title and registration, and prior tax evidence available. Generic fee estimates cannot replace the county's assessment.
Finish both handoffs
At delivery, inspect the vehicle and keep the carrier's condition report. Complete the county process before the applicable deadline, and ask about lawful road use if the old registration expires. A transport delay or missing lender document should be addressed promptly rather than treated as an automatic extension.
Plan your shipment
Request a shipping callback with the route, vehicle, condition, and preferred timing. This is an inquiry; it does not book transportation, take payment, establish registration eligibility, or confirm carrier acceptance.
