What If My Car Shipping Company Misses Pickup?

Highroad Auto Transport · Sources checked October 11, 2026

The clear answer

If your vehicle has not been collected, first establish whether the agreed pickup window has actually expired and whether a carrier was assigned. Ask the company responsible for dispatch for a written update before making another booking. A missed estimate does not automatically establish a refund or compensation entitlement.

Check what was promised

Compare the quote, confirmation, and messages. Identify the pickup window, any guarantee, conditions attached to it, and the party that made the promise. A preferred date entered into an inquiry form is different from a date accepted in a transport agreement.

Keep the original confirmation and a dated timeline of calls and messages. Record when the vehicle was ready, whether the location was accessible, and whether the contact person answered. This separates a scheduling failure from a release or access problem.

Ask dispatch specific questions

– Has a carrier accepted the shipment, and what is its legal name? – Has the driver confirmed a revised window? – Is the delay caused by dispatch, access, weather, equipment, or vehicle condition? – Does the revised plan change the price, deposit treatment, or delivery estimate? – Who will provide the next update, and when?

The FMCSA consumer advisory explains why identifying the broker and actual transporter matters. A person taking your booking may not operate the truck.

Protect the vehicle's release arrangements

Tell a seller, auction, dealership, or storage yard about the delay. Confirm opening hours, release authorization, and any storage charges. Ask for an extension if appropriate, but do not assume transport-related delay automatically waives the facility's fees.

If travel plans change, arrange an authorized representative and share that information through the agreed dispatch channel. Do not leave keys or documents in an unsecured location because a truck was expected.

Decide whether to wait or cancel

Request the proposed new arrangement in writing. If cancelling, review the cancellation trigger and ask for written confirmation that dispatch is cancelled, whether a carrier has already incurred charges, and how any refund will be handled. Resolve the first booking before authorizing a replacement so two drivers do not arrive for one vehicle.

Keep receipts for actual extra costs; they are evidence, not a guarantee of reimbursement. If the company will not respond, use the complaint route appropriate to the conduct and obtain advice about a specific contractual dispute. A regulator complaint does not itself award damages.

Contact and next steps

Contact Highroad for a website inquiry or content correction. For a booked shipment, use the responsible company’s agreed contact and notice procedures. A general form submission does not replace formal notice or extend a deadline.
