Car Shipping Payment on Delivery: COD, Balances, and Receipts
If your shipment uses payment on delivery, confirm the exact balance, accepted payment method, payee, and handoff procedure before the truck arrives. COD does not universally mean cash only, and the driver may not accept the same methods as the booking company. Ask for written instructions and a receipt; investigate unexpected changes through a verified contact.
What does COD mean for my car shipment?
COD describes a balance collected at a specified delivery or handoff stage. It does not by itself tell you whether the provider accepts a cashier’s check, cash, card, or another method. Ask who receives the balance and whether an earlier payment goes to a separate business.
Request one written breakdown showing the total, amounts already paid, and amount remaining. If the broker fee and carrier balance are separate, label both. Our guide to booking and transporting roles helps explain why there may be more than one payment recipient.
What should I confirm before delivery day?
- The balance due and any approved adjustments.
- The exact recipient name for a check or payment.
- The accepted method and any disclosed transaction charge.
- When payment is due within the inspection and unloading sequence.
- Who supplies the receipt and delivery paperwork.
- What happens if an authorized receiver handles delivery.
How do I handle a last-minute payment change?
Pause and confirm the instruction through the booking or carrier contact you independently verified. A text changing the payee or requesting an unfamiliar transfer account needs an explanation, even if it includes your route and vehicle. Do not share account credentials or card security details with an unverified caller.
Ask for the reason, revised written amount, and applicable agreement clause. A disclosed vehicle-condition change is different from an unexplained surcharge. Read when a car shipping quote can change before treating every adjustment as either legitimate or fraudulent.
What records should I keep after paying?
Keep the receipt, balance confirmation, payment reference, and the carrier’s legal name. Match the vehicle and booking details to the delivery document. Save original emails or files rather than only a cropped screenshot that omits the date or recipient.
If somebody else receives the vehicle, give them clear authority and ask them to preserve the same records. Planning example: a college student in North Carolina receives a car shipped by a parent in New Jersey. Agree in advance who can pay, who signs, and who inspects; those are related responsibilities but not automatically the same person.
Does paying remove my right to report damage?
Payment and condition documentation address different parts of the shipment. Inspect promptly, photograph concerns, and record accurate condition notes on the handoff document. Do not assume a payment receipt doubles as a damage report or that a damage report authorizes withholding every charge.
If money and damage are disputed together, follow the agreement, preserve evidence, and seek legal guidance when necessary. Our delivery-damage steps explain how to protect the factual record and send a claim to the proper recipient.
Questions about delivery balances
Can I pay the driver by card?
Only if the assigned carrier confirms that method. A website accepting cards does not establish the driver’s payment options.
Should I pay twice if the driver cannot see my deposit?
Resolve the accounting with verified contacts and provide the earlier receipt. Request a written balance calculation before making a duplicate payment.
Does Highroad take COD payments on this website?
The website accepts shipment inquiries. Later transport-payment arrangements require separate confirmation.
