RV Shipping Requirements: Dimensions, Contents, and Propane

The clear answer

Confirm whether your RV will be driven, towed, or carried on a trailer before comparing quotes. Each method has different equipment, condition, documentation, and insurance questions. Give the operator accurate dimensions and disclose propane systems and loose contents before acceptance.

Measure the complete transport configuration

Supply the RV type, actual length, width, height, and weight information. Include roof air conditioners, antennas, ladders, spare tires, rear racks, and hitch equipment. Tell the operator whether published measurements exclude accessories.

For trailer transport, the loaded combination's height and weight matter, not only the RV's own measurements. Ask who determines permit needs, chooses the authorized route, and arranges escorts where required. The Texas permit guidance illustrates a state process; it is not a nationwide permit covering every state on the journey.

Match condition to the transport method

For a tow-away move, discuss tires, wheels, brakes, lights, bearings, coupling, breakaway equipment, registration, and roadworthiness with the operator. For a motorhome being driven, clarify who drives, what insurance applies, and how mileage and fuel are handled.

A vehicle carried as cargo may still need to roll, steer, or support loading equipment. Disclose leaks, seized components, low clearance, and collision damage before a truck is assigned.

Secure the living area and exterior

– Empty or secure loose contents according to the operator's instructions. – Close and secure cabinets, windows, roof vents, and doors. – Stow slides, awnings, steps, and antennas in the required travel position. – Discuss tanks, appliances, batteries, and electrical isolation with the operator. – Photograph the roof, exterior, interior, and included equipment where safely accessible.

Transport acceptance does not establish coverage for household contents. Ask specifically about contents, mounted accessories, roof damage, and coverage differences between driven, towed, and carried transport.

Obtain propane instructions before handoff

Describe installed tanks and removable cylinders and ask for the operator's written preparation requirements. Do not assume that closing a valve, having an empty gauge, or removing a cylinder satisfies every transport rule. Do not vent gas or modify a fuel system yourself; use qualified service when needed.

Finally, confirm sufficient turning space and a level handoff area at both ends. Provide campground, storage-yard, or gated-property access details so the driver can assess whether collection is practical before arrival.

Plan your shipment

Request a shipping callback with the route, vehicle, condition, and preferred timing. This is an inquiry; it does not book transportation, take payment, establish registration eligibility, or confirm carrier acceptance.
