Shipping a Car to New Jersey: Title and Registration Checklist

The clear answer

New Jersey MVC instructs new residents to transfer their out-of-state license and vehicle registration within 60 days of moving, or before the existing documents expire, whichever comes first. Check expiration dates before arranging transport so the earlier deadline does not catch you out.

Confirm which MVC visit you need

Title transfer, initial registration, driver licensing, and vehicle inspection are related but distinct tasks. Use MVC's moving instructions and current appointment guidance to identify the correct service location and documents.

Do not assume a driver-license appointment will also complete every vehicle transaction. Ask about joint ownership, a business-owned vehicle, or an owner who cannot attend before booking the visit.

Assemble title and insurance evidence

Prepare the out-of-state ownership records, current registration, identification, New Jersey insurance information, and required applications. Use the MVC initial-registration checklist for your ownership situation.

If a lender holds the title, ask MVC how the title should be requested and where the lender must send it. For a leased vehicle, coordinate with the lessor about authorization and documents. A payment statement or transport bill of lading is not automatically acceptable proof for the title transaction.

Check inspection requirements separately

Ask MVC which inspection procedure and timing apply after your registration transfer. Vehicle type, age, and transaction can change the instructions. A deadline printed for a newly purchased or newly leased vehicle should not be reused as a blanket rule for all arriving vehicles.

Plan how to reach any required inspection legally if your old registration expires during shipping. Obtain guidance about temporary authority rather than assuming the transporter receipt permits driving.

Keep the delivery record distinct

Arrange a truck-accessible handoff location and inspect the vehicle before signing the condition report. Take clear photographs and note any newly observed damage according to the transport agreement.

Save purchase and tax documents for MVC's calculation of the transaction, and retain title-transfer correspondence until the new documents arrive. If transport or lender paperwork is delayed, contact MVC about the applicable deadline; neither delay should be assumed to create an automatic extension.

Plan your shipment

Request a shipping callback with the route, vehicle, condition, and preferred timing. This is an inquiry; it does not book transportation, take payment, establish registration eligibility, or confirm carrier acceptance.
