Shipping a Car to Washington: Title and Registration Checklist

Highroad Auto Transport · Sources checked October 11, 2026

The clear answer

Washington's new-resident guidance calls for obtaining a Washington driver license and registering the vehicle within 30 days of moving. Coordinate those steps with vehicle delivery and check any applicable exemption with the Department of Licensing. A newly purchased vehicle has a different title-transfer timeline.

Separate moving from buying

The Washington DOL moving checklist applies to a relocation. DOL's vehicle-purchase guidance generally calls for an ownership transfer within 15 days of purchase. Do not use the relocation's 30-day timeline to delay a purchase-related title transfer.

Tell the licensing office whether you already owned the car, recently bought it, lease it, or have a lender-held title. Those facts determine the documents and transaction rather than the shipping route alone.

Complete the licensing step

Follow DOL's instructions for obtaining the required Washington license before vehicle registration unless an exemption applies. Driver licensing and vehicle licensing may use different offices and appointments, so check the service you need before travelling.

A transport company cannot establish residency, issue plates, or determine a licensing exemption. Use the state process for those decisions and keep the transport arrangement focused on the vehicle handoff.

Prepare ownership and tax records

Ask a vehicle licensing office for the current out-of-state registration package, including the ownership evidence, signatures, identification, and any lender or lessor documents required for your situation. Coordinate lender-held title records before the car arrives.

Keep purchase, previous registration, and tax documents available so the office can assess applicable fees, taxes, or exemptions. Do not assume either that a relocation is tax-free or that every arriving car is taxed as a new purchase.

Plan lawful use after delivery

Confirm insurance and existing registration validity through the move. If the car cannot legally be driven after unloading, ask the licensing office about an appropriate permit or other lawful arrangement. The shipping receipt is not a driving permit.

Inspect the vehicle at handoff and preserve the condition report and photographs. Then complete the title and registration process and track any documents still outstanding. If a delay threatens a deadline, contact DOL promptly rather than assuming the carrier's schedule changes the state requirement.

Plan your shipment

Request a shipping callback with the route, vehicle, condition, and preferred timing. This is an inquiry; it does not book transportation, take payment, establish registration eligibility, or confirm carrier acceptance.
