Unexpected Car Shipping Fees: What Should You Check?

Highroad Auto Transport · Sources checked October 10, 2026

The clear answer

When an extra car shipping fee appears, ask what changed, which agreement authorizes it, how the amount was calculated, and who receives payment. Some charges reflect a changed shipment; others may be errors or disputed demands. Do not assume every surcharge is valid—or that every revised price is unlawful.

Scope: Practical contract and invoice review; no universal fee schedule or refund entitlement is stated.

Identify the event behind the charge

Compare the original shipment details with what actually happened. Common situations to ask about include a vehicle that will not start, a locked wheel, undeclared modifications, an inaccessible street, an unavailable pickup contact, and storage after a missed collection.

These are possible pricing factors, not a statement that Highroad charges a particular fee. Ask for the exact contractual basis and supporting details for your own booking.

Use a four-part invoice check

1. Trigger: What event supposedly created the charge, and when did it occur? 2. Authority: Where is the fee or price-change process stated in the agreement? 3. Calculation: Is it a fixed amount, daily storage charge, equipment cost, or another basis? 4. Responsibility: Which company imposed it, and who is requesting payment?

Keep the original quote, accepted agreement, dispatch messages, receipts, and photographs relevant to the issue. If someone claims the car was non-running, compare that claim with the disclosed condition and pickup record.

Storage and missed-pickup questions

Ask when storage starts, how days are counted, whether weekends affect collection, and what release documents are required. For a failed pickup, ask whether the driver attended the agreed place during the agreed window and whether the vehicle was actually available.

Do not confuse a broad pickup window with an exact appointment. The pickup-windows guide explains the difference. Auction and terminal charges may come from the facility rather than the road carrier.

If you dispute the amount

Send a short written explanation identifying the disputed line item and the evidence supporting your position. Request a corrected invoice or a written explanation. Ask what happens to pickup, delivery, or storage while the issue is reviewed.

Do not assume withholding the entire balance is a safe solution. Release rights, payment obligations, and available remedies depend on the agreement and applicable law. Obtain legal guidance promptly if a vehicle is being held or costs are escalating. For an unauthorized card transaction, contact your payment provider about its dispute procedure and deadlines.

Planning example: a lowered vehicle was quoted as a standard sedan. Before pickup, the customer discloses reduced clearance. A revised equipment proposal should explain the changed scope and price before acceptance.

Questions customers ask

Are all additional fees hidden fees?

No. The issue is what was disclosed, agreed, and actually supplied.

Should I accept a verbal price change?

Ask for written terms, including the resulting total and balance.

Can a quote form establish every final charge?

Not necessarily. Resolve vehicle, route, access, and timing details before accepting a booking agreement.

Plan your shipment

Share the pickup and destination, vehicle condition, timing, and any document or access concern. Request a shipping callback to discuss the next steps. A form submission requests contact; it does not book transportation, confirm acceptance, or take payment.
