Car Shipping From a Parking Garage or Valet: Plan Retrieval and Release

Garage retrieval, vehicle release and transporter loading are separate tasks. Confirm who brings the car out, who may sign, and where the carrier can load safely and lawfully. A valet having the keys or a building admitting passenger cars does not automatically settle the transport arrangement.

Identify the actual garage entrance and keyholder

Give the garage’s physical address, correct entrance and current holding location. The apartment address, garage entry and management office may differ. Provide the person who can explain retrieval and release.

Ask whether the owner must attend or provide authorization, what identification is needed and what hours apply. Resolve any account or access issue with the garage before describing the car as ready. Do not assume the driver’s arrival overcomes an unresolved parking arrangement.

Agree who retrieves the car before loading

A low-clearance garage can fit the vehicle while excluding the trailer. Ask whether staff or an accepted representative can retrieve it to a location the carrier has reviewed. The garage’s car-moving service and the transporter’s loading scope may be different.

For a nonstarter, unusual alarm or electronic access problem, disclose the facts to both parties. Do not expect valet staff to supply recovery or loading equipment they have not agreed to provide. Avoid DIY retrieval through a hazardous approach.

Confirm the releasing person’s actual authority

A valet authorized to park the car is not automatically accepted to sign transport documents or approve changes. Discuss the proposed representative’s role with the carrier and owner, and obtain whatever authorization the parties require.

Give the person the VIN, keys or accepted access method, inspection instructions and verified contact. A concierge who can open a gate may still not be the releasing person. Record roles rather than treating all building staff as interchangeable.

Review loading permission and any property paperwork

Ask the building or garage what commercial access it permits and whether any specific documentation is requested. Pass those requests to the responsible party before dispatch. Do not supply another business’s insurance document as though it establishes this provider’s coverage.

If an alternative point is needed, review safety, legality, access and who moves the car there. A map showing an empty curb does not establish permission. The truck-access guide explains why door-to-door depends on the actual property and equipment.

Keep retrieval condition and pickup evidence clear

Inspect safely when the vehicle is accessible and record existing marks before the handoff. If garage staff retrieve it and another person releases it, note the sequence and keep useful evidence without claiming it automatically decides responsibility.

The carrier’s condition record should refer to the actual vehicle and shipment pickup. A valet ticket or parking receipt is a different document. Retain the signed transport record and explain to the receiver how to compare condition.

Plan the garage at delivery too

If delivery ends near a garage, confirm who attends inspection, who brings the car into parking and whether admission is available at that time. The owner may need an accepted receiving representative while traveling.

A quote that includes vehicle transport does not automatically include valet service or storage. Review any additional scope and charges, and arrange authorized contacts at both endpoints rather than solving only the departure garage.

A garage or valet handoff plan

Assign separate people where the roles differ
RoleConfirmation needed
RetrieveWho can bring the car out, with what access and hours?
ReleaseWho is authorized and accepted to inspect and sign?
LoadProvider-reviewed safe and lawful location for the actual trailer.
DocumentsAny property requests passed to the responsible party.
ConditionPickup evidence distinct from parking or retrieval receipts.
ReceiveInspection, admission, keys and any separately agreed parking service.

The concierge opens the gate; the owner’s friend signs

A garage retrieves the car to an approved handoff point. Building staff manage access, while a friend accepted by the carrier inspects and releases the vehicle. Each party knows its role, and the receiver later compares the car with the actual pickup record. The concierge is not assumed to authorize every part of the shipment.

This example is hypothetical; it does not describe a documented Highroad shipment.

Questions readers ask

Can a transporter enter a passenger parking garage?

Supply the entrance, height, approach and equipment details for review. Do not assume trailer access because the car itself fits.

Can my valet sign the bill of lading?

Confirm the provider’s acceptance and the owner’s authorization for that actual role; valet parking duties alone do not establish it.

Does door-to-door include moving the car into a delivery garage?

Review the accepted scope. Garage admission, valet movement and storage are not automatic additions to vehicle transport.
