HIGHROAD / VEHICLE TYPE
Oversized vehicle shipping
Oversized vehicle shipping needs actual dimensions, weight, loading condition, and route access. A specialized equipment and routing review is required before a standard auto-transport assumption can be made.

When does a vehicle need an oversized review?
Measure the actual unit, including modifications and accessories. A large commercial vehicle, modified pickup, tall RV, or unusual work unit may not fit standard car-carrier space. Factory model dimensions can be insufficient when a lift, rack, attachment, or oversized tires change the load.
Equipment suitability and road routing need assessment together. Depending on the load and jurisdictions, permit or other movement requirements may apply. There is no universal oversized threshold or one nationwide permit promise made on this page.
What details help us assess your request?
Provide overall length, width, height, weight if known, vehicle type, operational condition, origin/destination, and dates. Explain dimensions that may change if equipment is safely removed under an approved plan.
- Describe loading-yard surface, clearance, and turning space.
- State whether the unit is drivable, towable, or needs loading equipment.
- Identify fixed attachments and uncertain weight estimates.
What affects oversized transport cost and timing?
Dimensions, weight, equipment, loading/unloading needs, route suitability, and movement requirements can change the scope. Confirm what the quote includes and who is responsible for any permit, escort, or lifting requirement that applies.
The shortest road distance is not automatically a suitable route. Ask which conditions affect the pickup window and delivery estimate. Do not book lifting services or commit a jobsite date until the complete movement plan is agreed.
What should be ready at both loading locations?
Confirm measured dimensions, authorized release, safe access, and any approved lifting or loading arrangements. Secure or remove accessories only under an appropriate plan and document condition. Do not drive or tow an unsuitable vehicle to solve a loading problem without confirming roadworthiness and the actual movement requirements.
A practical planning example
For a modified work truck moving from Houston to Atlanta, include the rack and tire changes in its measurements. If delivery is to a constrained jobsite, the receiving access must be reviewed alongside the highway route.
This is a planning example, not a scheduled route or a completed Highroad shipment.
How do I know whether my vehicle needs oversized transport?
Use the real dimensions and weight, then have the equipment requirements assessed. “Oversized” is not determined by a model name alone. Give overall length, width, height, weight, wheelbase where relevant, and any projections or attachments.
A lifted pickup, tall van, service-body truck, or heavy auction unit can have different needs. Measure the vehicle as it will ship, including racks, mirrors where relevant, mounted equipment, and accessories. The provider must consider both the vehicle and the loaded combination.
Which measurements should I include, and how precise do they need to be?
Provide accurate measurements and identify any estimate. Guessing can produce the wrong equipment assessment. Describe whether parts fold, retract, or can be removed, and who is responsible for preparing them. Do not assume an accessory will be removed at pickup.
If you have a manufacturer specification, check that it matches the current configuration. A truck with larger tires or a roof-mounted unit may no longer match the factory figure. Send photos if requested through the agreed channel, but do not rely on a photo alone to establish dimensions.
Will permits or escort vehicles be needed?
The actual loaded size, weight, route, and jurisdiction determine that assessment. An oversized request does not automatically require the same permits or escorts everywhere. Ask the transporting specialist which requirements apply, who obtains them, and whether the related costs are included.
FHWA lists state oversize and overweight permit contacts. Rules and permitted travel conditions need checking for the chosen route. We do not issue a blanket legal determination from a vehicle description or claim that a standard carrier quote covers permitting.
Can the truck load at my job site, farm, or storage yard?
Site access and ground conditions need review before collection. Describe turning room, grades, soft ground, gate dimensions, overhead obstructions, loading surface, and any site restrictions. The specialist may need another handoff location or loading arrangement.
A work yard outside Houston, a farm near Des Moines, and a mountain-area property in Colorado pose different access questions. These examples are not promised routes. Explain whether the vehicle can move safely to a suitable loading area and who controls access there.
Why can oversized shipping take longer to arrange?
Equipment matching, accurate measurements, route review, and any required permissions add planning steps. An urgent request can be assessed, but urgency does not remove those requirements. There is no universal number of days that applies to every oversized movement.
Give the earliest release date and any receiving deadline. Ask which milestones must be completed before pickup can be confirmed. If dimensions change, notify the provider before collection; adding a rack or loaded equipment can change the plan.
What should an oversized shipping quote explain?
It should identify the vehicle configuration, proposed equipment and loading method, route scope, timing assumptions, and responsibilities. Ask about permits, escorts, loading support, waiting time, and access-related charges where applicable. Confirm coverage and what a changed measurement would mean.
State whether the unit is empty or carries other equipment. For commercial cargo as well as a vehicle, compare the freight scope guide. Start the request with the measurements and condition rather than only “large truck.”
Oversized vehicle shipping: common questions
Can I use the manufacturer’s dimensions?
Use actual measured dimensions when modifications, equipment, or attachments change the unit. Identify measurements that are estimates.
Are permits automatically included?
No. Confirm which requirements apply and how responsibility and charges are handled in the actual quote.
Can an oversized unit use enclosed transport?
That depends on dimensions and available equipment. Do not assume a standard enclosed trailer will fit.
