Can You Ship a Leased or Financed Car? Permission and Paperwork

Published by Highroad Auto Transport · Sources checked October 10, 2026

The clear answer

A financed or leased car needs a route-specific permission and paperwork check. Review your loan or lease agreement, ask the lender or lessor about restrictions, and confirm the carrier’s requirements. Domestic relocation, Hawaii ocean transport, lease return, and foreign export are different situations. Do not assume that possession of the keys or registration authorizes every shipment.

Scope: Permission and document planning for leased or financed vehicles; the lender, lessor, carrier, and destination authorities control their own requirements.

Does having a loan stop me from requesting a shipping quote?

You can gather transport information before resolving every document question, but disclose the ownership situation and proposed route. Requesting a quote does not establish permission to ship. Read the loan or lease terms and ask the lender or lessor about relocation, transport, and destination restrictions.

Tell the provider whether this is your own relocation, a purchase with financing, a lease return, or delivery to another person. These are different handoff arrangements. Our shipping document guide explains why ownership and authorization questions should be separated from the quote itself.

What should I ask the lender or leasing company?

  • Is the proposed destination or transport mode permitted?
  • Is written permission required, and who can issue it?
  • What information must a permission letter contain?
  • Who holds the title, and how can required documents be obtained?
  • Are there notification, insurance, or return-location requirements?
  • How long will document preparation take?
Use the lender’s established contact channel and retain the response. A salesperson at the vehicle seller may not have authority to approve the lender’s requirements. Do not substitute a casual text for a document the receiving carrier or authority actually requires.

What changes for Hawaii transport?

Hawaii includes ocean and terminal procedures, so ask the selected carrier about lienholder or lessor authorization and ownership documents for your direction of travel. The requirements for going to Hawaii and leaving Hawaii may differ. Confirm them before sending a car to the mainland terminal.

Read Hawaii vehicle documents and preparation and request the current route-specific checklist. A mainland road provider’s document requirements do not automatically satisfy the ocean carrier. Keep the booking identity, owner name, vehicle identification, and permission details consistent.

What changes if the vehicle is being exported overseas?

Used-vehicle export rules have additional ownership-document requirements. Under 19 CFR 192.2, a leased vehicle or a recorded U.S. lien requires separate written export permission from the third-party interest holder, in addition to the applicable ownership documentation.

Confirm the current CBP port procedure and destination-country import eligibility with appropriate professionals before booking. An export permission letter does not itself prove that the destination will allow import or registration. Our overseas export planning guide covers that sequence.

How should a lease return or third-party handoff be arranged?

Confirm the exact receiving location, appointment, authorized recipient, and the leasing company’s return procedure. Transportation delivery and acceptance of a lease return are not necessarily the same event. Ask what proof the lessor needs and whether an inspection must occur through its own process.

Planning example: a lessee in Florida wants a car shipped to a designated return location in New Jersey. Obtain the return authorization and appointment first, then match the transport window to the location’s receiving hours. Keep transport condition records separate from any lease-end condition or mileage assessment.

Financed and leased car shipping questions

Must I give the truck driver my original title?

Ask for the route-specific requirement. Do not hand over ownership originals casually or leave them in the car without explicit instructions.

Does lender permission mean the carrier must accept the vehicle?

No. The carrier still reviews its own document, preparation, and vehicle-acceptance requirements.

Can I export before the permission letter arrives?

Do not plan around missing required authorization. Confirm the paperwork and official presentation process first.
