EV Car Shipping: Battery Condition, Charge Level, and Safety Questions
For EV shipping, confirm the assigned carrier’s acceptance and preparation instructions for your specific vehicle and route. Disclose battery damage, flooding, collision history, and warning messages before pickup. There is no single charge-level rule that safely covers every road and ocean shipment. A damaged battery needs a qualified safety and transport review, not a standard non-running-car assumption.
Which EV details matter before a quote becomes a booking?
Provide the year, make, model, electric or plug-in hybrid type, operating condition, and any known battery or charging issue. Explain whether the vehicle can move normally, whether keys or access cards are available, and whether special controls are needed for neutral or transport mode.
Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the vehicle rather than asking the driver to improvise. Our EV shipping service guide explains why equipment, route, and operating condition need to be reviewed together. An everyday road move and an ocean-connected shipment can have different acceptance requirements.
What charge level should I leave in the battery?
Ask the assigned carrier for written instructions and identify which leg they cover. Do not apply a percentage from an ocean carrier’s policy to every domestic road transporter. Provide enough information for the carrier to assess loading and unloading needs, including whether the vehicle loses charge while parked.
If preparation requires charging, follow the manufacturer and qualified service guidance. Do not attempt to charge a vehicle with suspected battery damage simply to make a shipment easier. Ask whether the carrier expects a functioning low-voltage system, special access instructions, or any separately packed charging accessories.
Why is flood or collision damage especially important?
PHMSA’s EV safety advisory addresses transportation requirements for vehicles with lithium batteries that may have been damaged through submersion during extreme weather. Battery condition is a safety and acceptance issue, not merely a price detail.
Disclose what is known and what has not been assessed. Do not use a salvage-title label or a vehicle that still powers on as proof that its battery is safe for ordinary transport. If there is an immediate fire, smoke, or other emergency, move away and contact emergency services; do not continue a routine loading conversation.
How do I explain controls without creating a loading risk?
Prepare a short vehicle-specific handoff note with approved access and operating instructions: key location, door access, manufacturer transport-mode information, and any unusual control behavior. Ask how the carrier wants that information delivered. Keep passwords and account access separate from ordinary handoff instructions.
Do not leave the vehicle in a mode you do not understand or attempt manual battery isolation. If the car cannot move, read the inoperable loading guide and arrange an equipment review. The customer’s role is to disclose and prepare; the equipped operator controls loading and securement.
What changes if my EV is going to Hawaii?
Check ocean acceptance before committing to the mainland pickup. Acceptance can depend on carrier policy, battery condition, ownership, and the particular vehicle. A road carrier willing to move the car to a port does not establish that the vessel operator will accept it.
Use our current Hawaii EV and plug-in hybrid guide, then reconfirm with the selected ocean carrier before booking. Planning example: a California-to-Hawaii EV request needs both mainland loading arrangements and ocean approval; an accepted road quote does not replace the second check.
EV shipping questions customers ask
Is every EV treated as hazardous cargo in the same way?
Do not generalize. Vehicle type, battery condition, transport mode, and applicable rules determine the review.
Can I ship a flood-damaged EV?
Request a qualified safety and transport assessment. Standard vehicle transport must not be assumed suitable.
Will the car be charged during the trip?
Ask. Charging support is not an automatic part of a shipping request.
