Shipping a Flood-Damaged, Fire-Damaged, or Salvage Vehicle

The clear answer

Before booking a damaged or salvage vehicle, establish both its physical condition and its paperwork status. A salvage title does not describe how safely the vehicle can be loaded, and a car that starts may still present a serious transport hazard. Provide the full damage history and obtain explicit acceptance for the proposed equipment and route.

Scope: Domestic transport planning and disclosure; specialist hazardous-material and ocean acceptance decisions remain shipment-specific.

Separate the title brand from the loading condition

Ask the seller or storage facility for the title or certificate type, release requirements, and recent photographs. Separately confirm whether the vehicle rolls, steers, brakes, and starts; whether tires hold air; and whether bodywork or other parts are loose.

Describe visible leaks, broken glass, exposed components, fire exposure, and flood history. Include known repairs and remaining faults. Avoid vague descriptions such as “minor damage” when a photograph or repair assessment can explain the actual issue.

Give flood-affected EVs special attention

PHMSA's advisory explains that installed lithium batteries potentially damaged by flooding can trigger hazardous-material transport requirements. An ordinary car-hauler booking should not be used as a substitute for the required assessment and compliant handling.

Do not charge, jump-start, open, or attempt to repair a suspected damaged high-voltage battery to make the vehicle movable. Give the carrier and qualified vehicle or hazardous-material specialist the information needed to decide whether, and how, transport can proceed. If there is an active emergency, contact emergency services rather than arranging routine pickup.

Build a usable condition packet

– VIN, year, make, model, and current location. – Wide photographs plus clear views of damaged areas. – Known flood, fire, collision, or battery history. – Available keys and information about wheel, steering, and brake movement. – Relevant inspection or repair findings already available. – Seller release, gate hours, and the facility's loading capability.

Share the packet through a verified channel with the responsible operator. A general quote form is not the place for sensitive ownership records or a large damage file.

Resolve acceptance before storage charges build up

Ask whether the proposed equipment can collect the car from its current position and deliver it to a place that can unload it. Confirm who pays for recovery assistance, missed appointments, or additional storage. Arrange a realistic release date after approval.

Ocean operators may apply stricter exclusions than a road transporter. A carrier's acceptance of one damaged vehicle says nothing about a different vehicle or voyage. International shipments also need destination-country eligibility and export-document review.

Common questions

Does a salvage title automatically prohibit domestic transport?

The title label alone does not settle transport acceptance. Condition, documents, equipment, and applicable rules all matter.

Can a damaged car be exported because CBP recognizes salvage titles?

That addresses one documentation category, not destination eligibility or carrier acceptance.

What if the seller cannot provide current condition information?

Resolve that uncertainty before booking a service that depends on operability.

Plan your shipment

Share the route, vehicle condition, timing, and any access concern when you request a shipping callback. A form submission requests contact; it does not book transportation, take payment, or confirm carrier acceptance.
