Plan San Francisco auto transport at street level

Provide both endpoint ZIP codes, the vehicle, condition, and ready date. In San Francisco, the handoff also needs a realistic account of available curb space, driveway geometry, garage clearance, and the route into and out of the location. A street address alone does not show whether a long trailer can stop and load there.

San Francisco, South San Francisco, Daly City, and Oakland are different municipalities. If the car is stored outside the city while the owner lives in San Francisco, quote the storage location. Use a neighborhood name only as additional context. A request for door-to-door service should still allow for an agreed accessible handoff when the address cannot accommodate the accepted equipment.

Check curb reservation eligibility before applying

SFMTA has a temporary-signage process for moving vans and specified activities. Its guidance says temporary signs do not override existing street-cleaning, no-stopping, or red-curb restrictions. Ask SFMTA whether the proposed vehicle-loading activity qualifies and which permissions apply; do not assume every auto-transport handoff is eligible for a moving reservation.

Begin that review early if the plan depends on reserved space. Coordinate the location and time with the carrier before paying for a reservation that may not fit the actual equipment or accepted window. An approval to clear a curb does not guarantee a truck can navigate the approach, and it does not substitute for a property’s permission to use its driveway.

Planning example: A resident proposes collection outside an apartment on a busy street. The resident asks the city about the specific activity and shares the proposed space with the carrier. If the request is ineligible or access is unsuitable, they agree on a lawful alternative before treating that curb as the pickup point.

Slopes, garages, and low-clearance vehicles

For a garage-stored car, explain the exit height, ramp angle, and whether someone can drive it outside. Provide photos showing a steep driveway transition or a low front splitter. The loading approach must fit the car as well as the trailer. The carrier may need to evaluate equipment or request a different staging point; a generic enclosed quote does not settle those details.

Planning example: A collector car is stored below street level and has reduced clearance. The owner measures the relevant clearance, provides ramp photos, and discusses how the vehicle can reach the handoff. Loading acceptance is resolved before pickup, rather than relying on a driver to improvise equipment at the garage.

Receiving a car when your parking is not ready

If you are moving into San Francisco, confirm where the vehicle will be kept after unloading and who can receive it. A residential parking permit concerns the delivered car; it should not be treated as a permit for the hauler to load on the street. If your assigned garage space begins after the expected delivery window, arrange another authorized storage option instead of asking the carrier to hold the vehicle indefinitely.

For dealer or private-sale moves, verify the real storage address, release documents, key contact, and staffed hours. A Bay Area seller may use a lot in another city. Read the purchase shipping guide to separate sale paperwork from carrier pickup requirements.

Equipment, pricing, and timing questions

Compare open transport and enclosed transport with the vehicle’s clearance, dimensions, condition, and desired exposure protection in mind. Ask about actual loading arrangements and coverage rather than using enclosed as a synonym for guaranteed access or complete protection.

The full route, direction, requested dates, equipment, and access influence the quote. Tell us if the handoff depends on a property appointment or city authorization, and ask how schedule changes will be communicated. Use the pickup-window guide to distinguish a preferred date from a commitment accepted in writing.

Prepare for pickup and delivery

  • Confirm the carrier's identity, written price, payment terms, and contact process before the move.
  • Follow the accepted carrier's instructions for fuel or charge level, belongings, keys, and accessories.
  • Photograph the vehicle at pickup and delivery, keep the inspection record, and note condition concerns promptly.
  • Agree on an authorized representative if you cannot be present, including who holds keys and signs the record.

Use the vehicle inspection checklist, shipping-document guide, and insurance questions for the detailed checks. Registration after a permanent move is separate; start with the California registration and emissions guide.

Routes to and from San Francisco

These endpoint pairs are planning examples, not advertised departures or shipment records. Request a quote for the actual direction, dates, and vehicle. Mainland-to-Hawaii inquiries need a separate ocean and terminal review; Alaska is not served.

Example routeWhat to clarify
San Francisco ↔ New York CityReview urban curb access at both ends before requesting equipment.
San Francisco ↔ PortlandCoordinate garage release and an available receiving contact.
San Francisco ↔ San DiegoClarify the actual Bay Area origin and Southern California address.

San Francisco car shipping questions

Does an SFMTA moving reservation automatically cover car shipping?

Do not assume it does. Ask SFMTA about the proposed activity and applicable permissions. Temporary signs do not override existing restrictions, and the carrier still needs to approve truck access.

How much does San Francisco car shipping cost?

The quote depends on both endpoints, direction, dates, vehicle size and condition, equipment, and access. Provide the actual ZIP codes and ask for a written price with any additional charges and cancellation terms.

Can I choose open or enclosed transport in San Francisco?

Request either option and explain the vehicle’s needs. Equipment availability, clearance, loading method, and the accepted carrier’s terms must be confirmed. Enclosed transport does not replace a coverage review.

Can you ship a nonrunning car from San Francisco?

Disclose whether it starts, rolls, steers, brakes, has keys, and has damage or leaks before requesting equipment. Loading acceptance is determined for the actual condition; a standard open-trailer quote does not establish winch service.

Is the San Francisco quote form a booking?

No. It requests a callback about the shipment. A truck, price, pickup window, and contract must be confirmed separately before you rely on a booking.
