HIGHROAD / TRANSPORT TYPE
State-to-state car shipping
State-to-state car shipping moves a vehicle between U.S. states using a route-specific plan. Give both ZIP codes, the vehicle’s condition, and your dates rather than relying on a state pair alone.

What does an interstate transport request need?
The actual origin and destination matter more than naming two states. Los Angeles to Manhattan, San Diego to a New Jersey dealership, and a rural California pickup to upstate New York are different access and scheduling requests.
Open and enclosed options can be discussed, with specialized equipment assessed for non-running or oversized vehicles. Interstate transport is not one fixed schedule or a promise that every address is truck-accessible. Highroad’s domestic request coverage includes the contiguous 48 states and Hawaii, excluding Alaska.
What details help us assess your request?
Provide cities or ZIP codes, year/make/model, condition, trailer preference, and a useful pickup window. Include seller release, driveway or street access, and when someone can receive the vehicle.
- Disclose modifications and loading limitations.
- Explain whether dates are preferences or hard constraints.
- Describe any change of pickup location that is still pending.
How do interstate pricing and transit estimates work?
Distance is one factor; capacity, vehicle dimensions, condition, trailer type, access, and dates also matter. Compare quotes for equivalent service and clarify whether each figure is an estimate or a confirmed booking price.
Ask for expected pickup availability and a separate delivery estimate. Traffic, road conditions, weather, other stops, and access can affect transit. A shorter state-to-state move is not automatically available for a same-day handoff.
What should be confirmed before crossing state lines?
Confirm the transporting company’s identity, applicable registration, written scope, and coverage. Prepare keys and condition records and arrange authorized people at both ends. Follow the provider’s preparation instructions and use the booking contact process for changes. Vehicle registration at your new home is a separate matter from the shipping request.
A practical planning example
For a sedan moving from Dallas to Atlanta, provide the two ZIP codes and earliest ready date. If the delivery is to an apartment that cannot receive the car until Friday, disclose that rather than giving only the preferred pickup day.
This is a planning example, not a scheduled route or a completed Highroad shipment.
How is state-to-state shipping different from a local move?
The carrier needs the actual pickup and delivery locations, not just the two states. California-to-Texas could mean a Los Angeles dealer to a Dallas home, or a rural pickup to another remote destination. Distance, access, vehicle needs, and available capacity differ.
Give ZIP codes, readiness, operating condition, and a workable receiving window. A short interstate route may still need scheduling, while a long move can involve multiple handoffs along the carrier’s run. The state names help orient the request but do not establish its price or transit time.
How many days will my interstate car shipment take?
Request a pickup window and a separate transit estimate for your specific route. Calendar distance alone does not explain loading sequence, road conditions, access appointments, or available equipment. Ask when the transit estimate starts and which date commitments are written into the booking.
For Los Angeles to New York, explain whether delivery means Manhattan, Long Island, or another location. For Houston to Atlanta, disclose limited seller hours. Do not plan a flight, work start, or vehicle resale around an unconfirmed exact arrival time.
Are certain routes always cheaper or faster?
No route label guarantees either outcome for every date and vehicle. Metropolitan endpoints may offer different options from remote locations, but the actual availability must be checked. We do not claim a daily departure, fixed lane price, or “best route” without current evidence.
Florida-to-New Jersey seasonal travel, California-to-Texas relocation, and Midwest-to-Southeast purchases are useful planning examples. The right question is what can be arranged for your dates, car, and handoff sites—not whether a city pair has a permanently preferred status.
Can I ship between two rural addresses?
Submit both locations and describe the final access. Gates, gravel roads, steep driveways, low clearances, or limited turning space may require a nearby agreed meeting point. Do not assume every highway carrier can reach the end of a rural road.
For a property outside Bozeman or a rural Maine destination, include road and loading-area details. If the car does not run, explain how it can be brought to the truck. Local recovery or towing should be identified separately rather than hidden inside the interstate request.
What if I buy the car online and never see it before pickup?
Confirm the seller’s identity, payment and release status, exact collection location, keys, and current condition. Ask for a mechanical inspection separately if needed; transport inspection records visible condition and is not a guarantee about the purchase.
For an auction purchase, provide release requirements, collection hours, and storage deadlines. For a dealership, name the staff contact. The auction transport guide explains why a paid invoice may not be the only step needed before collection.
How do I compare state-to-state quotes and provider details?
Compare the same equipment, vehicle condition, date window, and endpoint access. Ask for the transporting company’s identity, applicable cargo coverage, payment terms, change policy, and whether the amount is estimated or confirmed. Review independent FMCSA consumer guidance.
Highroad accepts requests across the contiguous 48 states and Hawaii, excluding Alaska. Hawaii needs a separate ocean plan, explained in the Hawaii shipping guide. Include any fixed deadline in the form so route feasibility can be discussed before booking.
State-to-state car shipping: common questions
Can you ship within one state too?
Yes, you can submit an in-state request. Exact locations, vehicle, equipment, and scheduling availability still need review.
Is Hawaii handled like a mainland route?
No. Hawaii involves ocean and terminal requirements in addition to any road transport. Confirm the full itinerary.
Can I change the destination after booking?
Discuss the change with the booking contact first. A different location can affect route, access, price, and timing.
